Washington D.C.: Joaquin Phoenix starrer Joker has become the biggest October launch of all time with the collection of USD 93.5 million over the weekend.

According to a leading newswire, the Warner Bros film which raged huge controversy for depicting violence minted USD 93.5 million over the weekend. Joker beat the collection of Sony's superhero tentpole Venom which raked in USD 80 million.

Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker had been under scanner over fears that the disturbing origin story of Batman's infamous foe could inspire violence.

While Joaquin's performance is being largely praised, the film, on the other hand, is being criticised for its dark content and sympathetic tone towards the villain.

Moreover, the film which opened to rave reviews has started a debate over its depiction of a mentally ill assassin which could trigger violence.

Owing to its dark theme, the movie theatres across the country are asked to take extra safety precautions.

Joker features a new take on the comic book character's origin story and follows an aspiring stand-up comedian called Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) whose mental health issues escalate, ultimately leading him to a life of criminality.

Apart from Phoenix, the movie also features Robert De Niro, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker is a part of the DC Comics universe but will serve as an independent origin story and will not feature any appearances by Batman and other caped crusaders.

The film is getting early Oscar buzz after winning the Golden Lion, the Venice International Film Festival's top award. Earlier this month, Joker received an eight-minute standing ovation at its Venice Film Festival premiere for the origin story that the makers mapped out for Batman's arch-villain - Joker.
