Mumbai: Director Karan Johar recently confessed that the script of his one of the blockbusters hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai lacked sense.
Talking about the blockbuster hit, Karan highlighted the ethics and gender politics that went wrong in his film and also said that the character Rahul which was played by Shah Rukh Khan lacks a spine and is actually flawed.
"Rahul as a character is deeply confused," said Karan. Whatever took place in the character's life was a consequence of the actions of other characters including dead wife Tina, his eight-year-old daughter and his best friend Anjali.
Karan added, "It was Shah Rukh Khan's persona and charm which made the character prominent and added value to it."
He said that the story had made no sense and lacked logic. Even the eight letters that Tina which was played by Rani Mukherjee, wrote for daughter on each birthday made no sense.
Talking about a scene in particular, in which Rahul taunts Anjali before her wedding, Karan said, "That’s not how I’d written the scene. In my original draft, Anjali tears into Rahul and calls him out. She says he doesn’t know how to stand up for himself. I threw out the scene because I thought it would cause a disservice to my leading man."
For fixes, he said, "I'd give him a spine and more EQ [emotional quotient]. I’d also introduce more confrontation. Rahul, today, would be able to have an open conversation with Anjali. He’ll know that she likes him and he’d address that with her. If Tina were to die, he’d come to terms with his feelings for Anjali and go back to her, not sit moping."
Karan, who wrote the film when he was 24 with no formal training or experience in filmmaking, said that his sensibilities have changed over time. He said, "But my sensibilities changed because I surrounded myself with newer and younger energies. I became more democratic and began practising an open-door policy; that helped me understand where I was going wrong and act on it. I also became more comfortable in my own skin and stopped comparing myself and my work with others."
He also spoke about a deleted scene that he had written where Anjali bashes Rahul saying that he fails to take a stand for himself. The director said that he would keep the scene as a part of the film if it was being made at present.
Karan Johar's last release Kalank did not fair very well at the ticket counter though his upcoming films promise a good collection. He is all set for his upcoming projects Dostana 2 and Takht hitting the screens next year in 2020.
