Kerala's first transgender candidate hits campaign trail

Malappuram (Kerala): Ananya Kumary Alex, contesting in Vengara constituency, is the first transgender in the election in Kerala. As the candidate of the Democratic Social Justice Party, Ananya is in the race alongside stars such as UDF's Kunjalikutty and the LDF's P Jiji. Victory or defeat is not on Ananya's mind. She wants to represent the transgender community in the election. "I want to mark my existence, rather than merely living," says Ananya. She added that the purpose of entering politics is to become a representative of her community and if she wins, she wants to work for a section of the people who are marginalized in the society. Ananya is also the state's first transgender radio jockey.
