Zendaya on mature Malcolm & Marie role: 'It just happened at the right time'

When Zendaya decided to take on the lead role in the new film Malcolm & Marie, it was a conscious effort on her part to cross a threshold in her career. It's a mature role unlike anything we've seen from the Emmy winner. Director Sam Levinson, who is also the Euphoria creator and showrunner, wrote the script specifically with Zendaya and Washington in mind. Both actors, along with Levinson, serve as producers as well—a first for Zendaya. Malcolm & Marie premieres on February 5 on Netflix.
