Muslims in Bangladesh celebrated the festival of Eid-al Fitr on Monday, joining prayers to mark the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan amid a virus pandemic. As Bangladesh continued to report an upward trend in both numbers of new cases of infections and deaths from COVID-19, authorities asked people to avoid mass prayers in open fields where tens of thousands of worshippers gather during normal times. The Muslim-majority nation of 160 million has banned big congregations but has allowed people to join prayers in mosques by maintaining a safe distance.
