For many years, television networks used exit polls to understand the how and why of American elections and who supported the winning candidates and why. But the way Americans vote is changing. In 2016, every four in 10 American voters cast their ballots before Election Day, either by mail or in person at early voting locations. It's no longer possible to survey a representative group of voters with pencils and clipboards at neighbourhood polling places.
