A dazzling display of fireworks marked the end of the Tokyo Olympics closing ceremony on Sunday night. The ceremony took place in a stadium devoid of spectators, bringing a delayed and heavily restricted Games to a close. Held in the middle of a resurging pandemic, rejected by many Japanese and plagued by months of administrative prlems, these Games presented logistical and medical obstacles like no other. The theme of the ceremony was “Worlds We Share,” capturing the effect of the pandemic and the virtual worlds and separation anxiety to which it has given birth. Meanwhile, thousands of people, including medalists who have returned from Tokyo, gathered near the Eiffel Tower to welcome the handover of the Olympic flag to Paris, which will host the Games in 2024. A flyover by jets released blue, white and red smoke - the colors of the French flag - in the sky of the capital. Paris will organize the Games 100 years after last hosting the Olympics in 1924.
