According to a meta-analysis of a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, people who regularly consume tart cherry juice not only increases their body's ability to perform and the efficiency, but also helps in rebuilding muscles that have been damaged due to various reasons. Alongside, it also improves their ability to exercise.
Results of Studies on Tart Cherry Juice
The study concluded that Tart cherry concentrate has a significant benefit for endurance exercise performance. Tart cherry concentrate has a significant benefit for endurance exercise performance. Tart cherry concentrate may enhance endurance exercise performance via its low glycemic index, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative capacity, and blood flow enhancing effects.
Philip Chilibeck, associated with the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and co-author of this research informs that it is a well researched study. “The results of this meta-analysis found that participants' performance improved with regular use of tart cherries. To know the reasons for this, a detailed study was also done in the research”. He further explains that in this new meta-analysis, 10 studies were done on tart cherry and its effects on the body. Participants in this research were subjected to an average age of 18.6 to 34.6 years. A total of 127 men and 20 women were included in these 10 studies. Most of the participants were exercise and sports-trained individuals, including cyclists, runners and triathletes.
In these studies, participants were fed tart cherries in different forms, such as powder and extract, for seven days before the trial. In two of these 10 studies, participants' performance seemed to be improved after consuming tart cherries.
Benefits of Tart Cherry Juice
Tart cherry juice is rich in nutrients such as vitamin B, calcium, iron, magnesium, omega-3 and omega-6 fats and antioxidants etc. Along with this, they also contain some plant compounds, which are beneficial for health. According to the results of different research done in the same regard, the benefits of regular consumption of cherry juice are as follows:
- Drinking cherry juice provides relief in muscle problems. Research in this regard has revealed that tart cherry juice provides strength to the body. At the same time, tart cherry supplements too can be given to men to increase strength.
- Tart cherry juice can also be beneficial for people who have insomnia i.e. problem of sleeplessness. Cherries contain natural melatonin hormone, which is believed to be responsible for sleep. Actually, tryptophan and anthocyanin, which forms melatonin in the body, is found in good quantities in it. In a study based on tart cherry’s effects on sleep, insomniacs were given 480ml of tart cherry juice everyday, for 2 weeks. Later, it was seen that people who consumed the juice could sleep for more than 85 minutes.
- The consumption of tart cherry juice can provide relief in arthritis. It also provides relief in joint pain and swelling.
- In the problem of gout, the amount of uric acid increases in the blood. Tart cherry juice can help in bringing this level down.
- Glaucoma causes vision loss. In the problem of glaucoma, there is fluid pressure build up inside the eye, which can also result in vision loss. During research, it has been seen that people who took anthocyanin treatment for glaucoma saw an improvement in their vision. And, this anthocyanin present in this cherry is beneficial for glaucoma patients.
- Another study on the same topic showed that consumption of this juice helps in improving short term memory. People can sharpen their memory by consuming tart cherry juice daily for about 12 weeks.
