10 Benefits Of Spiny Gourd

The spiny gourd is also known as Kantola or Kakora in Hindi. It is a vegetable with many benefits that is rich in protein, iron at the same time low in calories. Listed below are some health benefits of the spiny gourd.

There are many seasonal fruits and vegetables, which come along with several health benefits. Amongst the many monsoon specific fruits and vegetables, Spiny Gourd, also known as Kantola or Kakora in Hindi. It is a very healthy vegetable and can be eaten in various ways. Dr. Ranganayukulu, Ph.D. in History of Ayurveda says, “Agricultural societies in ancient India have identified numerous health benefits of this tender fruit. You can fry it, add to a curry, make fritters and eat it as a starter”.

Talking about the health benefits of the spiny gourd, here is what Dr. Ranganayakulu explains:

  1. Blood Pressure: Consumption of the fresh fruit juice of the spiny gourd helps regulate the blood pressure. The anti-lipid peroxidative properties present in it helps in healing the artery walls and its wear and tear.
  2. Prevents common infections: It has the ability to prevent common viral infections that cause cold and other lung infections. It also consists of anti-allergic, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
  3. Free radicals: Free radicals in the body hinder the growth and survival of the cells in our body. Therefore, the antioxidants and flavonoids present in the spiny gourd can scavenge these free radicals. Thus, enhancing the life span. Also, it protects the liver and prevents the accumulation of fat in it.
  4. Weight loss: Spiny gourd is a low-calorie vegetable and its consumption favours weight loss. It adds a good amount of moisture to the body.
  5. Kidneys: It reduces the chances of stone formation in the kidneys and can effectively remove the stones in the kidney and bladder.
  6. Anti-aging: Spiny gourd has anti-aging properties. It contains beta carotene, lutein, xanthines, etc., which help in keeping the skin healthy and well textured.
  7. Eye health: Vitamin A is the key nutrient for a better vision. Therefore, this vegetable being rich in vitamin A helps in improving the eye-sight.
