Ageing and struggling with a stressful day-to-day life lead to the development of many diseases, which majorly affect our life and lifestyle. All these problems also have a direct impact on our sex life. Experts and physicians believe that if more than one health problem exists in the body at the same time, commonly referred to as Comorbidity, eventually both men and women may start losing sexual interests due to various reasons. But what are these comorbid problems and how do they affect the sexual relationship? Team Sukhibhava spoke to Dr. Rahul Reddy, Consultant Microsurgical Andrologist, Hyderabad.
What are Comorbid Problems?
Dr. Reddy explains that the existence of more than one disease in the human body at the same time is called comorbid problems. These diseases can be both physical and mental. It can be understood in such a way that problems like diabetes, high BP and stress are present in the person's body at the same time. Dr. Reddy explains that due to these diseases and many times due to their medications, our body’s system, nerves and desires generated in our mind are affected, due to which either the sexual activities of many people have almost ceased or they are not satisfied with it.
Co-morbid problems and their impact on sex life:
- Diabetes
Diabetes is a serious problem that has a major impact on our health. The physical and mental problems that develop due to diabetes affect the sexual relationship. For example, if during sexual intercourse, a person’s sugar levels fluctuate, men may lose erection and women may lack sexual arousal. Not only this, sometimes due to diabetes, problems like impotence, inability to have sex and infertility can also arise in men. - Hypertension
High blood pressure can lead to a lessened sexual desire in people. Due to higher blood pressure, most of our body systems are affected, as a result of which, the stimulation necessary for sexual intercourse in the body is decreased. It can also affect the reproductive organs of women and men. Where men have problems related to erection, women face problems related to the dryness in their reproductive parts. Apart from this, the desire for sexual intercourse also ends. - Obesity
Obesity has a direct effect on sexual arousal, due to which their sexual activities are also affected. The heaviness of the body because of obesity can make the partner feel uncomfortable. Apart from this, the problem of fatigue and a decrease in stamina can also arise. - Depression
It is said that sex is like a medicine for stress, that not only pleasures the mind but also produces hormones in the body that help to relieve stress. But it is also true that depression or other psychological problems can also be a reason for the loss of sexual urge. In these situations, the person becomes disillusioned with physical relations and even if they want to, problems in erections and sexual arousal may be seen. - Vascular Disease
Problems in blood vessels or nerves, i.e. vascular disease can play an important role in affecting the sexual relations in a person. In this, the blood circulation in the genitals is improper and the stress or excitement for sexual intercourse cannot be felt. Also, problems like blood pressure also arise in such a condition. - Menopause
A woman's body undergoes lots of hormonal changes during menopause, due to which, many times the desire to have sexual intercourse may be reduced in them.
Therefore, Dr. Reddy explains that if a person is suffering from these diseases, it is mandatory to follow all the guidelines laid by his/her doctor, adopts the right lifestyle, takes medicines regularly and on time and has a proper diet, then their conditions can be controlled. As a result of which, there are chances that their sexual life may also improve.
