Once the babies start crawling or walking, they are interested in every little object they see around them. They wish to have a closer look at it, touch it, hold it and use it, which is natural and is a part of their learning process as they grow up. However, it is always noted that kids usually tend to go after specifically those objects or products in the house for which you may have shown them a red flag. But these products can sometimes be extremely harmful and should be kept out of reach of the little ones. Here’s is what you should keep away from children and why:
Drain Cleaners
Drain cleaners are usually used in case of a choked drain. The chemicals contained in it are harmful. The chemicals may be so strong that their fumes can lead to irritation of skin and eyes and can cause other health issues. Therefore, keep them away from kids. When you use it, ensure there is proper ventilation in the room and cover your face.
Room Fresheners
Strong and pungent fragrances of a room freshener can cause headaches in some people. Also, the chemicals it contains can cause irritation in the nose, throat, and eyes. Apart from this, room fresheners are highly inflammable and one needs to be very careful while using it.
Bleach
The chemical present in bleach is called Sodium Hypochlorite. Swallowing bleach can be very harmful and can even cause damage to the stomach as well as the food pipe. It should also never be mixed with any other solutions, especially ammonia as together they can produce many toxic fumes.
Detergents
Commonly known as washing powder, laundry detergents contain enzymes which help in removing stains from the clothes, but it can result in being extremely toxic if ingested accidentally. Thus, it is necessary that it is kept out of the reach of children.
Naphthalene Balls
Naphthalene balls or mothballs, which we usually keep with our woolen clothes to keep away the insects from attacking the fabric, contain insecticides and have a pungent smell. Its fumes can cause headaches. Also, since it looks like candy, kids may want to pop it into their mouths without any second thoughts, which can be dangerous.
Medicines
Medicines are good if taken as a cure for a certain health condition. However, there can be contrasting effects if taken without any underlying medical condition, especially by kids. These may also tempt kids as many of them look like candies, but their unnecessary consumption or excess swallowing can be dangerous.
Therefore, as tempting as they may look, certain household items can be extremely dangerous, not just for your kids, but for you as well. Products containing chemicals, pesticides or insecticides, cleaning solutions, batteries, cosmetic products, etc. can be hazardous to health, especially if ingested.
Thus, keep them out of reach of children at your home and lock the cupboards where you store them. Most of these products’ labels mention- “For external use only”. Read the labels before using the products, know the ingredients, and follow the steps mentioned on the label carefully.
