A healthy spinal cord is very important for the overall health of our body. In fact, our spinal cord is not only the basis of our body but is also connected to our brain and all the activities of our body are controlled by the brain itself. Therefore, any problem in our spine may not only solely reflect on our movements but may also cause other functional problems. With the advancement in the world of medicine and technology, with the help of continuous research and innovations, many spinal cord related conditions, in the current scenario, can be treated without surgery as well. And even if surgery is necessary, in most cases, physicians prefer minimally invasive methods or keyhole surgery. While in discussion with the ETV Bharat Sukhibhava team, Orthopedist Dr. Hem Joshi gave detailed information about Minimally Invasive methods.
What Is Minimally Invasive Surgery?
Dr. Hem Joshi explains that before the emergence of the minimally invasive surgery method, spinal surgery was considered to be extremely painful and doctors did not do it until the condition of the victim became very severe. Also, the person used to be traumatized by just hearing the name of surgery, because back then surgery meant a major operation and the compulsion to stay in the hospital for a long time. In the present times, with the advancement in medical technology and the introduction of modern endoscopes, microscopes, and navigation techniques, the nature of spinal surgery has changed considerably. Due to minimally invasive surgery, the anxiety and discomfort of the doctors have been largely eliminated. And in most cases, the patient is allowed to go back home a few hours after the surgery.
Better Option Then Open Surgery
Spinal surgery methods have changed considerably through minimally invasive methods or keyhole surgery. Minimally invasive spine surgery or MISS does not require much dissection and has many advantages over chronic spinal surgery. In this surgery, a small incision is made on the lower back. Special ultra-modern equipment is passed through it, up to the spinal cord, and with the help of a camera, the problem is resolved laparoscopically.
Dr. Joshi explains that the biggest problem in open surgery is bleeding. But this method of minimally invasive surgery does not cause much bleeding or damage to muscles, tissues, and arteries, and the chances of infection, as well as post-surgery pain, are also less. At the same time, in modern surgery methods, the recovery is rapid and the patient's dependence on painkillers after surgery is also reduced.
Get All The Information Beforehand
Dr. Hem Joshi says that whatever the type of surgery is, it is very important that it is done under the guidance of an experienced doctor. Another important thing to keep in mind is the post-surgery care to be given to the patient. Therefore, one must know everything prior to the movement restrictions and information regarding the diet to be followed after surgery. Talk to your doctor unhesitant and know about all the dos and don’ts. In addition, after surgery, get your checkups done regularly and do not stop the medication without the doctor’s advice. If you face trouble or complications, do not delay and consult your doctor immediately.
