While people across India eagerly await the monsoon season for various reasons, it brings along some challenges as well, especially related to health, hair, and skin. It becomes very important for both kids and adults to take good care of their skin because even the slightest carelessness can lead to skin infections and skin diseases. ETV Bharat Sukhibhava was in conversation with Dr. Sundeep Soin, Aesthetic Doctor and Medical Director at Surrey Skin Care, UK, regarding the problems faced during the monsoon season. Here is what he informs:

  1. Prickly Heat/Heat Rash
This is a very common skin disease and occurs during hot and humid times, especially in those parts of the human body which produce more sweat and the sweat gets trapped. The rash can be extremely itchy and even painful for some people. Not only this, if the condition worsens, sometimes people may have mild blisters on the site. However, with little care, one can get rid of it. In most cases, medical help is not required. The best way to avoid a heat rash is to keep the body cool and wear loose, and if possible, cotton clothes. Calamine lotion on the rash and antihistamine for itching can also be used in case of prickly heat. But if the heat is accompanied by swelling, a steroid cream may be required to reduce inflammation.
  2. Tinea Cruris/Jock Itch (Fungal Infection)
This is another common problem people face during hot and humid weather. Tinea infection of jock itch can occur in any part of the body, but it is more common in the groin and the areas surrounding it. This infection can also occur around the arms, neck, and breasts. The infection usually begins with a small rash, but with time, the rash gets bigger in size and turns red and scaly, similar to ringworm. Loose and airy clothes must be worn in such a situation. For the treatment of tinea, doctors recommend using antifungal creams and tablets which are easily available in the market.
  3. Mosquito And Insect Bites
Dr. Sandeep explains that when mosquitoes bite, large round swollen spots are formed on the site, which can cause severe itching and one may experience a burning sensation. Most of the time it’s the inflammation and can be treated by antihistamines. But if the condition worsens and you have painful rashes, consult a doctor immediately.
  4. Viral Rash
In monsoons, not just the bite of the mosquitoes, but the infections they carry around can also result in skin disease. Therefore, one needs to beware if a mosquito bite causes rashes. Rashes are also a symptom of dengue fever and they can be itchy as well. In such a condition, if you begin to experience any other symptom besides the rash, consult a doctor immediately.
  5. Acne
Humid weather can be rather challenging for teenagers, pertaining to skin-related problems. Additionally, young women too, who already have oily skin are more likely to struggle with it because sweat and other bodily secretions attract a lot of dirt, which can cause comedones and cystic acne may flare up.
  6. Sunburn
Sometimes, the sun shines at its highest intensity, even during monsoons. In such a situation, one may have sunburns. Therefore, a high SPF sunscreen must be used and direct sunlight must be avoided. Dr. Sandeep explains that although skincare is necessary to keep the skin healthy and glowing in all seasons, during monsoon, it needs a little extra care. Cleansing, exfoliation, toning, and moisturization are essential for healthy skin.
