Bengal mourns as Pranab Mukherjee leaves for heavenly abode

Darkness descends on Miraty village in West Bengal as people mourn the demise of former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. He passed away on Monday, 21 days after it was confirmed that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Kolkata: After the demise of former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, his village named Miraty in Birbhum district of West Bengal mourns the loss of a stalwart leader.

Miraty village is the ancestral home of former President Pranab Mukherjee and he always made it a point to be at his village home, during the Durga Puja. A devout Hindu, Pranab Mukherjee never missed his priest’s role in the annual festival.

Mukherjee passed away on Monday, 21 days after it was confirmed that he had tested positive for the coronavirus. The 84-year-old was in the hospital to remove a clot in his brain when it was discovered he also had COVID-19.

He was popularly known as Pranab Da, his life-long political career spanned about five decades, during which he held various key posts in the Congress as well as in the governments led by Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh.

Pranab da was honoured with India's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and Honorary doctorate and Honorary D.Litt.(doctor of letters) degrees for his contribution to the country and its politics.
