West Bengal: Minor dies in police custody; kin cry foul

The family of a minor boy has alleged that he was beaten to death inside a police station in Birbhum district. Following this, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called a 12-hour-bandh in West Bengal's Mallarpur on Saturday, alleging that the boy was beaten to death by police.

Birbhum (West Bengal): A 15-year-old boy was allegedly beaten to death by police inside Mallarpur police station in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Shubho Mehena of the same locality and was arrested by police on October 23 in a mobile phone theft case.

The family members alleged that the boy was arrested by police and he was beaten mercilessly inside the police station due to which he died.

The family of the deceased also alleged that Shubho was never produced in the court. However, the police, said that the boy died by suicide and sent the body for the post mortem.

Meanwhile, irate villagers clashed with police and blocked the National Highway by placing burnt tyres on road.

The protesters also vandalised public properties and pelted stones at the police personnel when they went to disperse the crowd.

Following this, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called a 12-hour-bandh in Mallarpur on Saturday, alleging that the boy was beaten to death because his parents were BJP supporters and also raised allegations against the TMC.

The ruling Trinamool Congress has denied the allegations, saying that BJP is politicising the issue.
