Kolkata: Seven people have been arrested in connection with Thursday's attack on BJP national president JP Nadda's convoy in West Bengal.

Taking suo moto of the incident, Bengal police have registered two cases against unidentified persons for stone-pelting on the convoy of veteran leaders.

Third FIR registered was filed against BJP leader Rakesh Singh, who is accused of provoking the crowd at Shirakol and Debipur. Singh was leading the convoy at the time of the incident.

On Thursday, the convoy of BJP leaders JP Nadda and Kailash Vijayvargiya came under attack allegedly by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers in Bengal while they were on their way to Diamond Harbour for a party event.

Stones were hurled at the vehicles, shattering windscreens of Vijayvargiya's car. The BJP leaders pinned blame on TMC supporters and said people were injured in the attack.

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar said on Friday that he has sent a report to the Centre on the violent attack on the convoy of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief JP Nadda.

"I have sent my report to the central government whose contents cannot be shared on account of propriety," news agency PTI quoted Jagdeep Dhankhar as saying at a press conference at Raj Bhawan.

The attack has led to a war of words between the TMC and the BJP. Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to Twitter saying, "Bengal has descended into an era of tyranny, anarchy and darkness under the Trinamool rule. The manner in which political violence has been institutionalised and brought to the extreme in West Bengal under TMC rule is sad and worrying."

"What can I do about it? The outburst of people's anger is not my responsibility. Despite the hardships faced by people owing to the lockdown, GST or the note ban, BJP did not stand by the people," the TMC youth wing chief and MP of Diamond Harbour constituency Abhisek Banerjee had told a rally at Arambag in Hooghly district on Thursday.
