Kolkata: Trinamool Congress registered landslide victories in four municipal corporations namely Asansol Municipal Corporation, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, Chandernagore Municipal Corporation, and the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, the elections for which were conducted on February 12, 2022.

Of the 41 wards under Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, Trinamool Congress candidates were winners from 39 wards, followed by Congress and independents at one each. Neither BJP nor Left Front was able to open their books in this municipal corporation area.

In Siliguri Municipal Corporation, the last citadel of Left Front so far in the state, elections were conducted for 47 wards. BJP emerged as the runner up winning from five wards, followed by CPI(M) at four and Congress at one.

Congratulating the voters for the Trinamool Congress' (TMC) thumping victory in the four municipal corporations, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday described it as an "overwhelming victory of Ma, Mati, Manush (Mother, Soil and the People)."

"It is once again an overwhelming victory of Ma, Mati, Manush. My heartiest congratulations to the people of Asansol, Bidhannagar, Siliguri & Chandanagore for having put their faith and confidence on All India Trinamool Congress candidates in the Municipal Corporation elections," tweeted Banerjee.

The TMC supremo also said that her party is committed to taking forward their development work with greater enthusiasm. "We are committed to carry forward our development work further with greater zeal and enthusiasm. My sincerest gratitude to Ma Mati Manush," she said in another tweet.

Earlier in the day, the TMC supremo said that her party was glad that the people were able to vote peacefully. "People could give their vote in a peaceful situation. We are happy with the result," she said.

Referring to the BJP's success in North Bengal in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC supremo said that despite getting votes across North Bengal, the BJP did nothing for the people.

"BJP got votes in Entire North Bengal including Siliguri, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, Alipurduar and North and South Dinajpur but they have done nothing for the people. We will work for the people and give them all sorts of civic facilities," said Mamata.

Opposition party leaders like BJP’s national vice president, Dilip Ghosh and the CPI(M)’s central committee member, Dr Sujan Chakrabarty, however, claimed that the results are not the true reflections of the people’s mandate. Both of them said that such results are reflections of the massive violence, rigging, and election malpractices on the polling day.
