Bolpur: Aggrieved intellectuals launched a stir to protest against an eviction notice served on Nobel laureate Amartya Sen to evict his house called 'Pratichi' just outside the Nobel laureate's house in Santiniketan on Friday.
The members of the 'Committee for Protection of Social Dignity' marched from the junction adjacent to the 'Pratichi' house to Visva-Bharati Cooperative Bank. Later, the artists protested by performing a play 'Raktakarabi' on the street. On behalf of the Visva-Bharati Authorities, acting public relations officer Mahua Bandyopadhyay, said, "We respect the court. The Magistrate issued Section 145 in front of Amartya Sen's house Pratichi. It has not been withdrawn yet. How can so many people gather and protest in violation of that section? Is the law only for Visva-Bharati?"

Amartya Sen claims that according to the will of Sen's late father Ashutosh Sen, the land belongs to him through inheritance. Professor Sen has already approached Suri District Court and Calcutta High Court in this regard. The High Court stayed Visva-Bharati's order to vacate the land.
The procession passed through the road in front of the house of worship and ended at Visva-Bharati Co-operative Bank. Abhijit Chowdhury, the organiser of the protest programme, said, "The kind of treatment meted out to Amartya Sen is unacceptable. That is why I joined the protest."
