Darjeeling: Four persons including a married couple were arrested with brown sugar worth Rs 1.5 crore in West Bengal's Darjeeling district on Thursday. Police said the couple was travelling along with a person, who also faked as a lawyer travelling in TC number plate through the hills of Siliguri in an attempt to dupe security officials.
The cops of Bagdogra Police Station, however, suspected a foul play and intercepted the car and foiled their attempt. Four people were arrested, including the woman in the raid in the midnight. Brown sugar worth one kg was recovered from the traffickers. According to police sources, the brown sugar was being brought from Murshidabad to Siliguri in a small four-wheeler. After receiving information from confidential sources, the police laid a trap at the Bhuttabari area of Bagdogra. At that time, the suspect car reached Bhuttabari and was accused persons were arrested immediately.
A police officer said, "We hesitated to stop the car and conduct search thinking a lawyer sat inside. After the ACP's insistence, we started searching the car and found the brown sugar."
The four arrested are Uttara Biswas, Sanjay Biswas, Vikram Bagchi and Arun Mondal. According to police sources, Uttara Biswas and Sanjay Biswas are husband and wife. They reside at Samarnagar in Siliguri and Vikram and Arun Phansidevar are residents of Tambari.
The arrested people were produced in Siliguri court on Friday. Siliguri Police Commissioner Akhilesh Chaturvedi said that the police of Bagdogra police station have started an investigation to find out the possibility of involvement of other persons in the case.
