Kolkata: Scuffle at Dumdum Jail between jail workers and captives left two inmates dead

Kolkata: A massive clash between undertrial prisoners and convicts in the Dumdum Central Correctional home in Kolkata on Saturday left two inmates while some of the inmates seriously injured. The deceased inmates have been identified as Kana Pappu and Kamalesh.

According to reports, this morning, some inmates insisted that they be released on parole but when the authorities refused to accept their demand, they launched a violent agitation. Inmates have allegedly vandalised the jail premises, attacked the jail officers and tried torching jail properties.

In this massive clash, as many as two inmates were killed while some of the inmates were critically injured.

A senior official of the West Bengal Correctional Services Department had said on Friday that allowing inmates' families to wait outside the prison was against the concept of social distancing, which is the key to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Following this, the stir soon turned into a clash between the inmates and the prison guards.

Reportedly, due to the coronavirus outbreak, a family member of an inmate can now only call up the prison authorities to enquire about his or her health.
