Kolkata (West Bengal): The Kolkata Police have arrested the watchman of a house in Kolkata for allegedly sexually abusing a nine-year-old girl before murdering her.
Earlier yesterday morning, the body of the nine-year-old girl was recovered from the terrace of a residential building in the city's Jorabagan area, sparking protests by locals, who claimed that the police did not take action when the family had reported that she was missing.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the nine-year-old, who went missing on Wednesday evening, was sexually abused and then murdered, the police had said.
Subsequently, the homicide branch of the Kolkata Police arrested the watchman of a nearby house.
The police interrogated Ramkumar alias Lambu overnight after his arrest.
Police said that Lambu, a native of Jharkhand, had moved to Kolkata a few years back and started working as a watchman.
Meanwhile, the police reportedly found that Ramkumar had been drinking on the day of the incident. A bottle of liquor was also recovered from the spot.

The watchman was arrested and taken to Jorabagan police station and later to Lalbazar where he was interrogated almost all night. According to police sources, he broke down during the interrogation.
During the interrogation, the police found out that the minor girl was lured with the offer of Biryani and called to the house. After sexually harassing the minor, Ramkumar became unconscious as he was intoxicated.
After regaining consciousness, the accused feared that the girl might speak up about her ordeal, and hence strangled her to death. The accused then reportedly stabbed the victim in the neck with a knife to confirm her death.
