Jnanpith-winning Bengali poet Sankha Ghosh hospitalised

Following respiratory tract infection, Bengali poet Sankha Ghosh, a recipient of the Jnanpith award, was admitted to a private city hospital on Tuesday. The hospital was planning to form a medical board for his treatment.

Kolkata: Bengali poet Sankha Ghosh, a recipient of the Jnanpith award, was admitted to a private city hospital on Tuesday following respiratory tract infection, doctors said.

The 87-year-old writer, who bagged the Sahitya Akademi award twice - 1977 and 1999 - underwent a chest x-ray and C-Reactive Protein tests.

According to a doctor, the condition is said to be stable.

The hospital was planning to form a medical board for his treatment.

Receiving India's highest literary award Jnanpith in 2016, Ghosh won his first Sahitya Akademi award for his book of poems "Baabarer praarthana". He received the award again 22 yars later for his translation of Kannada play "Taledanda" into Bengali as "Raktakalyan".
