Foreign cigarettes worth Rs 2 cr seized in Bengal

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized at least 20 lakh cigarettes of foreign origin in Kolkata, worth Rs 2 crore, and nabbed two persons in connection with the incidents. The cigarettes were seized in and around the Eastern Metropolis, and were reportedly smuggled into India from Myanmar.

Kolkata: At least 20 lakh cigarettes of foreign origin, valued at approximately Rs 2 crore, were seized by the officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), alongside nabbing two persons in connection with the incident.

"A total of 7.39 lakh cigarette sticks of 'Win' (China) and 'Esse Lights' (Korea) brands, were recovered from a truck terminal at Dankuni in Hooghly. They were reportedly smuggled into India from Myanmar," a DRI official told the media.

He said that, upon interrogation, the truck driver revealed that he had received the consignment from another truck driver and that the cigarettes were loaded at Guwahati, for delivery at a warehouse near Topsia area, along with some household items.

"Further inspection at the warehouse, revealed over 12.5 lakh cigarettes of different foreign brands such as Dunhill, Gudang Garam (Indonesian brand), Monde (UAE-based) valued over Rs 1.24 crore, and were immediately seized," the official maintained.

Both the drivers were arrested and produced before a court, which has remanded them to judicial custody till April 30.

Intro:After several reports published claiming that Ministry of Home Affiars has ordered Assam government to take action against the Editors opposing Citizenship Bill, the MHA has called it baseless and mischievous interpretation of facts.


Body:In its statement, the MHA claimed, 'it is mischievous to suggest that central government has asked Assam government to initiate action against any Editor or media person in Assam.

The Ministry claimed that the matter came to its notice after it received a public grievance petition to its Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System related the issue of Citizenship amendment Bill 2016. It stated that the issue was exploited by different militant groups like and the media has propagated their ideology to give them a boost.


Conclusion:Following this, the Ministry forwarded the petition to Assam government which is part of standard practice. The Ministry also clarified that no enquiry of anykind has been ordered by it.
