West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will make an aerial survey of the severe cyclone Bulbul hit areas around Namkhana and Bakkhali in South 24 Parganas district on Monday, she announced on Twitter.

Later, she would hold a meeting at Kakdwip with the South 24 Parganas district administration to "review relief and rehabilitation measures" of the cyclone-affected people.

Banerjee said she was also planning to visit the cyclone-affected areas of Basirhat in North 24-Parganas district on Wednesday.

7 killed as cyclone 'Bulbul' disrupts normal life in Bengal

Cyclone 'Bulbul', which barrelled through the coastal districts of West Bengal before hurtling towards Bangladesh, claimed at least seven lives in different parts of the state, official reports said on Sunday.

The severe cyclonic storm, which brought in its wake heavy rain coupled with gale wind till early Sunday, uprooted hundreds of trees and snapped cables in the city and its adjoining areas in North and South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore, bring life to a near-halt.

In North Parganas alone, five people were killed in separate incidents.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that the centre is closely monitoring the situation after cyclone Bulbul has hit Eastern India and assured the West Bengal government of full support.

"Closely monitoring the situation as cyclone Bulbul hits Eastern India. We are continuously in touch with central & state relief agencies. Have spoken to CM @MamataOfficial and have assured all possible help. I pray to almighty for those who are braving out this adverse weather," Shah tweeted from his official handle.

"10 teams of NDRF in West Bengal and 6 teams in Odisha have already been deployed and are assisting the state administration in the evacuation, restoration of roads and in the distribution of relief materials. Additional 18 teams of NDRF have been kept on standby," he added.

The severe cyclonic storm Bulbul has wreaked havoc in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas region on Sunday. Due to the speedy winds, several trees were uprooted and roads were blocked forcing the administration to carry out road clearance work.

Director of Alipore Meteorological Dept, GC Das has informed that Cyclonic storm Bulbul has changed moved further on its way. It now lies over coastal areas of Bangladesh, away from Bengal.

In the next 12 hours, this tropical cyclone will turn into a deep depression & lose intensity. Strong winds are expected to blow for the next 24 hour in West Bengal.

Fishermen are still advised to not venture into the sea.

As Cyclone Bulbul made landfall,Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about the situation arising out of itand assured the state ofall assistance to deal with the calamity.

Cyclone Bulbul made landfall in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Saturday.

"Reviewed the situation in the wake of cyclone conditions and heavy rain in parts of Eastern India," the prime minister wrote on Twitter.

The prime minister said he also spoke with Banerjee regarding the situation arising due to Cyclone Bulbul.

'Bulbul' lay centred near Sundarban National Park

Kolkata: Cyclonic storm Bulbul lay centred about 75 km east-northeast of Sundarban National Park in West Bengal, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD in a recent tweet wrote, "The cyclone is likely to weaken into a deep depression over coastal Bangladesh and adjoining south and north 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal during next six hours."

As per IMD's hourly bulletin released at 7:00 am, the weather agency stated that the 'severe' cyclonic storm Bulbul has weakened into a cyclonic storm and lay centred at 05:30 hours of today, over Bangladesh and adjoining coastal West Bengal. 

IMD has further predicted light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy spells of rainfall likely to continue over the south and north 24 Parganas and Nadiya districts in West Bengal during the next three hours.

"Squally wind speed 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail over northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal coast during the next six hours," said IMD in its advisory.

The cyclone had made landfall around 8.30 pm on Saturday 60 kilometres east of Sagar Island and 100 kilometres south of Kolkata.
