The Trinamool Congress leader who had contested from Nandigram, had lost to Suvendu Adhikari, her former aide and now BJP leader.

According to Article 164(4), an un-elected minister can become the chief minister but s/he will have to get elected within six months of assuming the office. This was why the Trinamool supremo had been insisting on for an early election. On the other hand, the BJP had been pressing for postponement of by-elections, on grounds that the COVID-19 conditions are conducive for conducting the bypolls.
