BJP trying to make deep inroads in South Bengal ahead of 2021 polls

Union Home Minister Amit Shah's two-day visit to South Bengal is being viewed as the BJP's aggressive push in the region ahead of the 2021 state Assembly polls. According to sources, Shah will make multiple visits to the state till the 2021 polls.

New Delhi: Union Minister Amit Shah on Thursday began a two-day visit to West Bengal, a state the BJP is desperately trying to claim.

Shah, who has been claiming that the saffron party would come to power in the state ever since he had been appointed as the president of the BJP, is now visiting South Bengal, considered a bastion of the Left and ruling TMC.

During Shah's West Bengal visit, his first to any state since recovering from COVID, the Home Minister will meet party workers in Bankura, Kolkata, and other nearby areas.

According to sources, senior leaders from the party had last time admitted to BJP's poor electoral show in South Bengal and blamed the poor selection of candidates for the elections. The saffron party is now desperate to gain a foothold in South Bengal, after having made significant gains in the northern part of the state.

Hence, Shah is scheduled to meet workers from nearly 70 Assembly segments in South Bengal during his two-day visit.

According to sources, the central headquarters of the party had last time selected candidates. This time, however, the party has decided to finalise candidate only after extensive discussions with local leaders on the ground.

According to sources, Shah will make multiple such visits to West Bengal as the state goes to polls in 2021.

Shah, who arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday night to take stock of the party's organisation ahead of the 2021 assembly polls, noted that West Bengal is a border state and the security of the state and the country is interlinked.

On Friday, he is scheduled to visit the Dakshineswar Temple, and also share a meal with a refugee family.
