Kolkata: West Bengal has turned into a ground of political violence due to the ongoing Assembly elections in the state. And in most cases, the two major political parties-- BJP and TMC have been seen trading barbs.
Meanwhile, clashes broke out between supporters of both the parties in Bhawanipore, which had been the earlier Assembly constituency of chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday.
According to reports, the incident took place when BJP candidate Rudranil Ghosh was campaigning in the area for his door-to-door campaign. Suddenly clashes broke out between rival groups of TMC and BJP supporters which further lead to pelting bricks and stones at each other.
Following the clashes, Ghosh also injured and admitted to a nearby hospital.
BJP has alleged that when their candidate Ghosh was campaigning, TMC goons attacked their vehicles and several BJP workers were left injured.
Later, BJP workers reached the Chetla police station there and lodged a complaint against TMC supports. They also alleged that TMC candidate from Bhawanipore, Firhad Hakim's followers attacked Ghosh and also vandalised his car, reports added.
On being informed, a large police force reached the spot, cordoned off the area and brought the situation under control.
The first three phases of the eight-phased West Bengal polls have already taken place. The fourth phase of the elections will be held on Saturday. Counting of the votes will take place on May 2.
