West Bengal set for final phase of polling

A total of 283 contesting candidates including 35 female candidates from 35 constituencies in 4 districts of Bengal are trying their luck in the eighth phase of the polls scheduled to be held on Thursday.

Hyderabad: West Bengal will witness its eighth and final phase of assembly polls on Thursday wherein a total of 84,77,728 voters will exercise their franchise.

A total of 283 candidates including 35 female candidates from 35 constituencies in four districts of Bengal are trying their luck in the eighth phase of the polls.

11 out of 35 constituencies have been declared as Red alert constituencies wherein 3 or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

According to the Election Commission, a total of 11,860 booths have been set up for the eighth phase of polls.

The data compiled by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) stated that, out of 283 candidates, 64 (23%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits while 50 (18%) candidates have reported serious criminal cases against themselves.

CPI(M)is leading the table as 7(70%) out of 10 candidates registered for the final phase of Assembly polls have criminal background.

The Election Commission has prohibited victory procession after the counting of votes of state assembly elections on May 2 in the wake of the surge in COVID-19 cases.
