Due to the lack of resources and poverty, women in Rithkula village of Bageshwar district in Uttarakhand are forced to plough the fields themselves instead of oxen.

Bageshwar (Uttarakhand): In Uttarakhand's Bageshwar district, women are seen toiling on the rocky terrain pulling the yoke instead of oxen. Due to extreme poverty, the helpless women are forced to adopt this way of ploughing due to the lack of farming equipment and basic infrastructure in these villages.

The lifestyle of women in Rithkula, a remote area in ​​Shama tehsil of Bageshwar district, has not been easy. Women from villages of Rithkula and Ratirketi grow crops in small fields and they plough the field themselves by placing the yoke on their shoulders instead of cattle. In the 21st century, when everyone talks about development, a glimpse of these women toiling to eke out a living reveals a totally different picture.

Shama tehsil in the district leads in vegetable and fruit production in the region. The Potatoes and Kiwi, grown here are much sought after in the country and also abroad. Sheetal Rautela, the Sarpanch of Gogina, a village close to Shama Tehsil says that due to poverty and lack of resources, women themselves are doing the work of bullocks in the fields. She added that the government hasn't paid attention to their issues and that being a remote area there is a lack of communication, due to which people are not able to take full advantage of government schemes.
