Uttarakhand High Court allows Hindu girl to offer 'namaz' at Piran Kaliyar shrine in Haridwar

A division bench of Senior Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Justice Pankaj Purohit allowed the petitioner to offer Namaz and ordered the police to provide security to her.

Nainital: In a significant development, the Uttarakhand High Court has allowed a Hindu girl from Madhya Pradesh to offer nimaz, the Muslim prayers at Piran Kaliyar shrine in Haridwar. The petition has been filed by 22-year-old Bhavna, a resident of Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh, and Farman, a resident of Haridwar.

In their petitiion, the duo have requested the High Court to allow them to offer Namaz at Piran Kaliyar and providing them security for the same. While hearing the petition, a division bench of Senior Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Justice Pankaj Purohit allowed the petitioner to offer Namaz and ordered the police to provide security to the petitioner.

The High Court said that before the girl goes to offer Namaz, she should give an application to the SHO of the concerned police station for security concerns. The court has directed the SHO to provide the girl with appropriate security. The court has posted the matter to May 22 for the next hearing. During the hearing, the court asked the girl why she wanted to offer the Muslim prayers at the shrine if she had not changed her religion.

To this, the girl told the court that she was “influenced” by the shrine and wanted to offer Namaz there. She further pleaded that she was not being allowed by the authorities to offer Namaz in Piran Kaliyar. The petitioners said that they are in danger from various religious organizations for planning to offer nimaz at the shrine and they should be provided security.

The girl said that she is a follower of Hindu religion and wanted to pay obeisance at the shrine. The girl said she was influenced by Piran Kaliyar. Bhavna requested the court to direct the District Magistrate and SSP of Haridwar to provide protection to her and her family from threats from the fundamentalists.

Piran Kaliyar shrine: Piran Kaliyar Sharif is believed to be the shrine of a Sufi saint of the Chishti order of the 13th century, Makhdoom Alauddin Ali Ahmed Sabir Kaliyari also known as Sarkar Sabir Pak and Sabir Piya Kaliyari. The shrine is 7 km ahead of Roorkee city of Haridwar district of Uttarakhand. There are many other shrines revered in Uttarakhand.

Among these, Sabir Piya's Dargah, Kilkili Sahib's Dargah and Hazrat Imam Sahib's Dargah are prominent. The Urs of Piran Kaliyar is very famous. Pilgrims from Pakistan also visit the state to pay obeisance.
