Unfazed by warnings illegal mining continues in Bhagirathi river

Despite the increased water levels of the Bhagirathi river, illegal mining is still being done from Tiloth to Manera. It is to be noted that there have been many accidents due to the rising water level in the past years. In spite of that, the administration seems to be in no mood to take any action to stop illegal mining.

Uttarkashi: The water levels of the Bhagirathi river has increased significantly due to the melting of glaciers.

Despite the increased water levels, illegal mining is still being done from Tiloth to Manera.

Mules are being used to ferry sand from the overflowing river. Workers are also risking their lives to mine the sand on small islands in the middle of the river.

Mining under Bhagirathi river has been completely restricted under Eco Sensitive Zone. Despite this, no action has been taken against this deadly illegal mining.

Every year in the month of June the surrounding areas are put on alert due to the increasing water level on the banks of river Bhagirathi.

At the same time, water is also released in the river from the Manari Hydropower Project. Despite all these warnings, mining still continues in the river Bhagirathi from Tiloth to Manera.
