New Delhi: Supreme Court judge Justice AM Khanwilkar recused himself from hearing a plea highlighting the "lackadaisical attitude" of the Uttarakhand government in dealing with crimes committed by the police during the struggle for a separate state.

The petition, filed by activist Raman Kumar, cited the FIRs and chargesheets filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against the police who reportedly committed five murders, seven gangrapes and were involved in 17 molestation cases and the killing of agitators during the struggle for a separate state.

Justice Khanwilkar recused himself from the hearing, stating that he had appeared as an advocate-on-record in connected proceedings before the apex court. He informed that another bench will now hear the plea.
