Women constables of the Uttarakhand police manage both work and family with great perseverance. They not only have to fight the usual crime, but also the patriarchal mindset of people in the workplace.

Dehradun: A woman police officer’s job is doubly difficult. Not only do they have to fight the usual crime, but also the patriarchal mindset of their colleagues and a glass ceiling that is supposed to be almost unbreakable.

There was a time when the very idea of a female police officer was unheard of. We’ve come a long way since then.

This progress didn’t just happen overnight, though. It took years of smaller breakthroughs brought on by these determined female officers in the face of a world that thought of them as nothing more than caretakers and housewives.

"Being a woman, we have to manage both work and family. Then we have to reach to the office on time. We have to answer many calls in a day. People make fake calls just to irritate us. But then we have to stay calm and answer all the calls. This brings a lot of mental pressure also," said Rajvinder Kaur, a female constable.
