Mussoorie: The renovation work of the 172-acre Sir George Everest House (residential complex) and the laboratory (Observatory) located in the Hathipaon Park Road area in Mussoorie has started after unlock-2.
The renovation work of the historic site Sir George Everest will be completed by March next year and will be seen in a new form, sources said.
Sir George Everest Heritage Park is being renovated by a scheme funded by the Asian Development Bank under the Uttarakhand Tourism Infrastructure Development Investment Program.
The restoration work has been entrusted to the Arun Construction Company and the estimated cost is Rs 23.70 crores.
The restoration work was launched by Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj on 18 January 2019.
The work was planned to be completed by June 17, but was delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic.
The renovation will give a new look to Cartographic Museum, Out House, Bachelor House, Observatory, Star Gazing Huts, Star Gazing Doms, Open Air Theatre, Portable Toilet, Portable Food Van, and Track Route Renewal of George Everest Peak.
Arun Construction Company Engineer Kuldeep Sharma said: "A large and small museum is being built keeping the original appearance of Sir George Everest House intact. The history of Sir George and the items used in research will also be displayed."
"Along with the construction of George Everest House, special care is also being given to parking and other basic facilities. At the same time, the road leading from the main road to Sir George Everest House has also been rebuilt," he further added.
"The house is being rebuilt from the mixture made by grinding it in a mill instead of cement on the lines of the British in order to retain the original appearance of the historic Sir George Everest House. Special Lahori bricks have been ordered for the construction of Sir George Everest House," Sharma said.
The lime, fenugreek and urad dal are ground with water to make a cement-like coating, which will make the bricks stick.
The highest peak in the world was named Mount Everest was named after Sir George Everest. He has spent a long period of his life in Mussoorie.
Between 1832 and 1843, many high peaks of India were discovered from the house and laboratory of Sir George Everest.
George served as Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843.
