Lucknow: The three-member team special investigation team (SIT), set to probe gangster Vikas Dubey's rise in the world of crime and how he managed to kill eight policemen in an ambush in his native village last month, has been given an additional time of four weeks to carry out the investigation.

The SIT constituted by Uttar Pradesh government on July 11 to conduct a probe into the crimes committed by the dreaded gangster, comprises additional chief secretary Sanjay Bhoosreddy, ADG Hariram Sharma and DIG J Ravindra Gaur.

The three-member team, which was asked to complete the probe and submit its report by July 31, is now supposed to present it before the state government by Aug 28.

The panel couldn't complete its probe on time and hence sought extra time from government, following which an additional time of four weeks was granted to complete the investigation, seniors officials of the Home Department said.

As per reports, the SIT panel headed by Bhoosreddy has so far recorded statements of about 50 people and evidence had been collected. However, statements of several witnesses are yet to be taken. The SIT is yet to receive the documents and complete details of Dubey from the police and administration.

These documents are related to the 2001 case in which Dubey was acquitted in the murder of the then state minister Santosh Shukla inside the Shivli police station in Kanpur. Documents related to the bail granted to him in other cases have also been sought but not yet received.

The SIT has been asked to probe the role of the police, his links with police personnel and the factors which led Vikas's emergence as a gangster.

In addition to this, the team is also investigating how Dubey got bail in 60 cases and possessed a number of gun licenses.

The three-member team has visited Bikaru village twice and also held talks with the district administration and locals.
