UP history-sheeter gives police the slip; aides nabbed

Three accomplices of Surender Kaliya, a wanted history-sheeter of Uttar Pradesh, were arrested from a lodge in Maihar in Madhya Pradesh. However, Kaliya managed to escape from the spot.

Lucknow: In a major crackdown on criminals, Uttar Pradesh police on Monday arrested three accomplices of wanted history-sheeter Surender Kaliya from Maihar in Madhya Pradesh.

The wife of the history-sheeter identified as Rita Shukla and two of his aides, whose identities are yet to be known, were arrested.

Acting on a tip-off, Uttar Pradesh police reached Maihar town this morning and nabbed them from a lodge. However, Kaliya managed to escape from the spot.

"We laid a trap and arrested them from a lodge in Madhya Pradesh's Maihar city. However, Kaliya managed to escape from the spot on receiving information about a police team being present near the lodge to apprehend him," a police official said.

"Kaliya is a history-sheeter and wanted in several cases in Uttar Pradesh. He also has several cases of loot, theft and murder registered against him at several police stations in Uttar Pradesh. In 2007, an action was taken against him under the National Security Act. We have launched a manhunt to nab Kaliya. We have begun interrogation of his wife and accomplices. Further probe in on," official added.

Notably, Uttar Pradesh police has announced Rs 50,000 reward to anyone providing information leading to Kaliya's arrest.
