New Delhi: At a time when the Centre has amended the farm laws at the stake of clearing the dues of the farmer within 3 days, Uttar Pradesh farmers have their own woes as their sugarcane dues of the last year have not been paid yet.
According to the reports, the sugarcane farmers had produced crop worth Rs 35,000 crore in the year 2019-2020. As of August 30, which is considered as the last day for the crop season, UP government has to pay more than Rs 8,400 crore to the growers.
As per the procedure, the government would clear the dues within 14 days, failing which the government has to pay an amount of 15 per cent an annum as interest.
Speaking on the matter, Pushpendra Singh, President, Kisan Shakti Sangh, farmers union slammed the government for not paying the farmer dues.
"If the government had dealt strictly with the borrowers, the farmers could be paid in time. As it is the government's fault, it would add a burden of Rs 2,000 crore on the state's exchequer", said Singh to ETV Bharat here.
He also pointed out that much of the cane price dues are from a few companies. Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar Ltd's 14 factories alone are yet to pay Rs 2,637.76 crore or 49.4% of their total Rs 5,339.17 crore SAP value of cane in 2019-20.
