Bahraich (UP): An undertrial prisoner in Gilola Police station in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich died on Friday. However, Bahraich T K Shibu has suspended the police station in-charge and also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.
The deceased prisoner has been identified as Wajid Ali of Purva area of the district.
According to jail officials, it is a case of suicide. On Friday morning Ali hanged himself with the help of a bedsheet inside the prison.
After Ali was arrested in an eve-teasing case under Section 354 of SC/ST Act and remanded to judicial custody by the district court on August 31, he was lodged in the Gilola jail, jail officials said.
Speaking to media persons here, SP Bahraich, Anup Singh said," Ali allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a ventilator in the jail on Friday. The prison authorities informed us about the matter.
"We are investigating the case. His body was sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the actual cause of death," Singh said.
"How can an undertrial prisoner commit suicide in the jail, when other people were present and the deceased was not alone. We demand a high-level inquiry into the incident. The IIC was demanding Rs 20,000 from my brother. As we did not arrange money to give him, police mercilessly tortured him and my brother was killed by the police officers," said Rahman, deceased's brother.
Meanwhile, the police have launched a probe to find out if it was a case of suicide or murder.
