Meerut: Thousands of migrant workers gathered at Jamuniabagh ground of Meerut on Monday, waiting for their turn to go to Meerut railway station and board trains to West Bengal.
According to sources, two Shramik Special trains for West Bengal and Bihar are leaving from the Meerut railway station today. Out of the two trains, one train has already left for Bihar. The second train will leave for West Bengal at around 4:00 pm today.
The government officials said that they had made arrangements for more than 1,200 labourers but the numbers are much higher than the set standards. The labourers had been waiting to board a train back home at the Jamuniabagh ground for the last two-three days, sources said.
Some of the migrants claimed that they have received no help from the administration and they were surviving on whatever food they get from social workers and other people, sources added.
Notably, the government has allowed the operation of Shramik special trains for the purpose of repatriation of stranded people amid the coronavirus lockdown, which has now been extended till May 31.
