Agra: At least two students were killed and two were critically injured after they were hit by a speeding car in Uttar Pradesh's Agra at around 8 am on Thursday, officials said. Police said the driver of the car has been picked up by jurisdictional police and further investigation is on.

Enraged locals, relatives, friends and acquaintances in the locality resorted to a stir. They blocked the traffic along Fatehabad-Agra road after the incident. The students were waiting for their school bus when the mishap occurred, a police official said. The accident site falls under the jurisdiction of Dauki police station.

According to eyewitnesses, the students of Spring Field Public School were waiting for the bus when they sighted the speeding car running amok. While a few students who sensed the danger moved away for their safety while others who did not have the luxury were trapped under the car. All the students were rushed to a hospital in the vicinity.

The doctors declared two of the children as "brought dead" and have began treating the other two who were critically injured in the accident. The bodies have been moved to the mortuary for post-mortem examination. The police have received complaints from the families of the deceased to whom the body will be handed over once the autopsies were carried out.

Meanwhile, police have been holding talks with the locals who were protesting against the accident and insisting on stringent punishment for the erring driver. Efforts are on to pacify the protesters and to resume traffic on Fetahabad-Agra. "We are holding talks with them and we have assured them that the accused will not be spared," a police official said.

Following the accident, the senior police officers and officials from the ditsrict administration rushed to the spot. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Fatehabad Saurabh Singh said that the car driver has been detained by the police.
