Ghaziabad: In order to decongest jails in the wake of coronavirus, as many as 89 prisoners, who were lodged in Dasna Jail here, were released on bail for two months, official sources said.

The prisoners released on bail included one woman, and they were all under seven year jail term, they added.

The decision comes after the Supreme Court earlier last week directed all states and union territories to constitute high-level committees to consider releasing on parole or interim bail prisoners and undertrials for offences entailing up to 7-year jail term to decongest prisons in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

Terming overcrowding of prisons "a matter of serious concern", the apex court had directed authorities concerned to deconjust jails to check spread of the deadly virus that has killed a large number of people across the world.

Authorities have informed the prisoners to surrender after period of the bail gets over.

They also made arrangements of buses to drop the prisoners to bus stops so that they could travel to their respective places from there.
