Lucknow: Policemen, who had gone to arrest two criminals, were beaten up by a mob in Varanasi's Harsos village on Monday.
According to sources, the supporters of the criminals assaulted the policemen, subsequently fastening them to a tree and also pelted stones at them.
The incident occurred when the officials arrived to arrest criminals Rajan Bhardwaj and Rahul after getting a tip-off.
The policemen were able to nab the criminals however, the situation got tense on there way back when a large group of supporters blocked the route and protested against their arrest.
Enraged over the arrest, stones were also pelted at the bike-borne officials. The mob later tied the officers to a tree and beat them up. Their service pistols were also taken away by the mob.
According to Varanasi SSP, Anand Kulkarni, the situation was brought under control after the deployment of additional forces in the region.
According to officials, many have been taken into custody for further investigation.
