Noida: Several officials including a sub-divisional magistrate- Gunjan Singh were injured after farmers staging a sit-in demonstration against the acquisition of their land at Jewar airport in Noida pelted stones at them on Monday.
According to reports, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration and police personnel reached the site to take the possession of the land, when they were attacked by farmers who have been refusing to give their land and seeking higher compensation for same.
The injured people including SDM Gunjan Singh has been admitted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
According to sources, the situation turned violent after some people started smashing the windows of the vehicles in which administration and police team arrived at the spot.
According to police, heavy police force was deployed to tackle the situation. Officials suggest that the situation has been brought under control but continues to remain tense. It is being told that some farmers have also been detained by the police.
While 5,000-hectare land is to be acquired for the entire project, the first phase of the airport would be spread over 1,334 hectare and is expected to be completed by 2023, according to district officials.
So far, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration has acquired 745-hectare land and transferred its possession to the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), the officials said.
Jewar airport, second in the National Capital Region after Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport, will be spread over 5,000 hectare and cost around ₹15,754 crore. It is touted to have six to eight runways, maximum in India, when fully built, the officials said.
