New Kanpur top cop says priority on 'eliminating' gangsters

Assem Arun, a 1994 batch IPS officer, has taken the charge as the police commissioner of Kanpur on Saturday. The newly appointed officer said that his top priority will be to eliminate the gangster criminals like Vikash Dubey.

Kanpur: After the Yogi Adityanath government on Thursday approved the Commissionerate system of policing in Kanpur and Varanasi, Assem Arun, a 1994 batch IPS officer, has taken the charge as Commissioner of Kanpur on Saturday.

The recently Commissionerate system was approved by the Cabinet, providing more powers, including magisterial, to police officers in a bid to improve policing.

While speaking to ETV Bharat, the 1994 batch IPS officer said that his top priority will be to eliminate the criminals like Vikash Dubey.

"To tackle the situation like 'Bikru ambush'- in which eight policemen were killed in 2020, we will form a special commando force to deal with the deep-rooted criminals like Vikas Dubey," said Arun.

Arun, a resident of the Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh, was born in 1970, was currently handling the responsibility of Dial 112 in Uttar Pradesh police.

The state government had in January last year implemented the Commissionerate system for Lucknow and Noida, and posted ADG-level officers as police commissioners.

In Kanpur Commissionerate, there will be 34 police stations, while Kanpur (outer) will have 11 police stations.

In this system, police commissioners will have executive magisterial powers as defined in Section 58 and Chapter 8 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and Chapter 10 (maintaining public order and peace).
