Mathura (Uttar Pradesh): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched the ambitious National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura, among a slew of government schemes for farmers.

Modi sat down with waste collectors and segregated plastic with them

With 100 per cent funding from the Centre of Rs 12,652 crore for a period of five years till 2024, NADCP aims at vaccinating over 500 Million livestock including cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats and pigs against foot and mouth disease.

The programme also aims at vaccinating 36 million female bovine calves annually in its fight against Brucellosis disease. The programme has two components - to control the diseases by 2025 and eradication by 2030.

Modi also personally interacted with farmers, veterinary doctors and plastic waste segregators. Taking his pledge to phase out single-use plastic he not only launched a welfare scheme to segregate plastic from waste but also interacted with a number of waste collectors.

He in fact sat down with them to tell them the importance of segregating plastic from waste so that it doesn't end up in the stomachs of bovines.

He inspected a machine facility that will recycle waste. He also interacted with veterinary doctors on how vaccines are administered to cows and what precautions are taken.

This is part of the government's effort to double farmers' income. Modi also interacted with select farmers who have been beneficiaries of government schemes.

The Prime Minister also launched nationwide workshops in Krishi Vigyan Kendras in all 687 districts of the country with artificial insemination of livestock as one of the goals.

Addressing a gathering here after joining women in segregating plastic from waste at a 'Swachhta Hi Seva' programme, Modi asked people to shun single-use plastic, adding that the wanton use of plastic posed a hazard to the environment and had led to livestock and fish being killed.

Mathura (UP), Sep 11 (PTI) Asking people to shun single use plastic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the wanton use of plastic posed a hazard to the environment and had led to livestock and fish being killed.

Modi was addressing a gathering here after joining women in segregating plastic from waste at a 'Swachhta Hi Seva' programme.

The prime minister sat on the floor with women who pick plastic from garbage and helped them sift through the waste, driving home a powerful message in his mission to end single use plastic.

Modi, who is on a day's visit to this Uttar Pradesh town, also launched the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) for eradicating foot and mouth disease (FMD) and brucellosis in livestock.

With 100 per cent funding from the Central government till 2024, the Rs 12,652 crore NADCP programme aims at vaccinating over 500 million livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats and pigs, against FMD.

The programme has targeted vaccinating 36 million female bovine calves annually in its fight against brucellosis disease, a bacterial infection transmitted from animals to humans.

The programme has two components -- controlling the diseases by 2025 and eradication by 2030.

During his visit, Modi interacted with farmers and also launched the National Artificial Insemination Programme.

As part of the "Swachhta Hi Seva" programme, the prime minister met 25 garbage workers. The women wore masks and a glove and responded to Modi's questions on garbage generated from households and the amount of plastic in them.

The women were honoured for their work.

Addressing the COP (Conference of Parties) to United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) at Greater Noida two days ago, the prime minister spoke of India's resolve to end single use plastic and urged other nations to embrace the cause as well.

"My government has announced that India would put an end to single use plastics in the coming years. We are committed to the development of environment-friendly substitutes and also an efficient plastic collection and disposal method," Modi said.

The government has pledged to eliminate single use plastic by 2022.

As part of the effort, the government is likely to put out descriptors of what constitutes single use plastic. PTI NAV SMI
