Locust swarms spotted in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur

After wreaking havoc across western and central India, swarms of desert locusts were spotted in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur district on Saturday morning. Talking to ETV Bharat, district magistrate C Indumati said that the local officials will undertake heavy spraying of pesticides during the night, as locusts rest during the night time.

Sultanpur: As locust swarms entered the state of Haryana, swarms of crop-destroying desert locusts were spotted in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur district on Saturday morning.

The news caused a stir among villagers and farmers as they ran towards their fields in desperation to save their crops.

District Magistrate C. Indumati told ETV Bharat that the concerned team from the agriculture department reached the spot immediately.

"As per the decision taken during disaster management task force meeting, an awareness program was run for the villagers, where local villagers were asked to make noise by beating ‘thalis’ to drive away a locust swarm," told Indumati.

Appreciating the cooperation of villagers, Indumati said that the local officials will undertake heavy spraying of pesticides during the night, as locusts rest during the night time.

In terms of crops, there has been no damage in the area so far, added Indumati.
