Shamli: Farmers are forced to destroy their crops in the fields due to lockdown amid coronavirus pandemic in Shamli.
The farmers are unable to visit vegetable mandis due to which they are facing major losses.
Mostly the farmers in the district grow vegetables on the lands which they get on lease. They sell the vegetables in Delhi's Azadpur Mandi and Haryana's Karnal Mandi.
The farmers are not able to sell their crops and hence they are rotting. In such a situation, they are forced to destroy their crops in their farms.
More than 100 farmers in the district grow vegetables in Thana Bhavan region.
Farmer Satish said: "I planted vegetables in 50 bigha of leased land and had taken a loan of Rs 80,000 for seeds."
However, he was not able to take the vegetables to mandis after which he destroyed his crops.
"If only I could have sold the vegetables then at least the amount of seeds could have been recovered. Now, the big problem is to repay the loan."
Another farmer Kuldip said: " I did vegetable farming on 22 bighas of land and I invested Rs 70,000 on the crop."
"There is no fertilizer and insecticide. I am unable to take the vegetables to the mandis. I have no option other than to destroy crops for next time," he further added.
Bharatiya Kisan Union, National spokesman Choudhary Naresh Tikait said: The union has demanded relief package from the government. If the government can write off the loans of industrialists, it must also think about the farmers."
