IPS officer accused of domestic violence

A case of domestic violence has been registered against an IPS Officer for torturing his wife over dowry demand. The officer has been booked under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 323 (voluntary causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimation).

Meerut (Uttar Pradesh): Amit Nigam, an IPS officer, belonging to the Nagaland Armed Police Battalion (NAP) has been accused of physically torturing his wife Namrata over dowry demand.

The matter came to light when, Namrata Singh, the wife of the IPS officer approached the Meerut police with injury marks on her body and registered a complaint accusing Nigam of regularly beating her up "like an animal" over the past few years.

She further accused her in-laws of demanding dowry worth a crore after a few days into the marriage. Namrata told the police, that the last time she was tortured at their Gurugram residence, where she was "physically tortured for hours at a stretch". Following which she left home and returned to her parents in Meerut and decided to file the case.
In her complaint, the 32-year-old, also mentioned that the violence meted out on her intensified as she confronted her husband with his extra-marital affair.

The office of the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police has, meanwhile, taken note of the incident and has asked the Meerut police to probe the case and file a report.
"The woman was brutally beaten so we have registered a case at a local police station here and investigations are underway, " said Prashat Kumar, ADG Police, Meerut Zone.

According to sources, a separate report would be sent to the Nagaland Government, the parent cadre of the accused.

Nigam has been booked under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 323 (voluntary causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimation).

Meerut SSP Nitin Tiwari told a reporter,"FIR was filed soon after the victim approached us. There are grave charges against the accused who is an serving IPS officer. Our investigation has begun and law will take its course irrespective of who the offender is."
