Kanpur: Former Director General of National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, V. Bhujanga Rao said that India has now become a superpower and the nation is trying to become self-reliant in the fields of Army, Navy and Air Force.
Talking to ETV Bharat, he said, "Most of the defence equipment was previously bought from foreign countries for which India had to spend huge money. But, now the nation is trying to become self-reliant in defence technology."
"Development of aircraft carrier using indigenous technology has strengthened India's image in the international scenario. Also, it is planning to make light and powerful submarines in future for which a special kind of steel is already being manufactured in our country," he added.
Talking more about the materials used for developing submarines, he said, "An anticorrosive paint system has already developed in India by which the underwater hull of submarines can be coated. It will help India to save a lot of foreign exchanges."
Dr Rao was here to attend a National Conference on Advanced Materials and Materials Technologies for Prototypes and Systems held at Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE), Kanpur in collaboration with Hyderabad's Raman Education and Research Foundation.
