UP government to hire women as bus drivers

Marking a step towards women's empowerment and safety, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to appoint female drivers on state-run buses.

Ghaziabad: In a move described as a major contribution to women's empowerment and safety, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to appoint women drivers on state-run buses.

The driving test to select the drivers is scheduled to be held on August 21 at Kaushambi. The selected drives will be deployed on routes around Ghaziabad.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Akhilesh Singh, Ghaziabad depot manager, said that this is the first time women drivers will be hired for state roadways buses.

"Women drivers will be driving buses purchased from the Nirbhaya fund. It will be the first time that the state will be hiring women drivers. Female passengers will feel safe seeing a woman driver and this move will inspire other women to take driving as a career," he said.

Singh further added that these special buses are also equipped with cameras and they will also have a panic button for any kind of emergency.
